What is mesotherapy? Learn more about its benefits, complications and costs

Mesotherapy is a technique for rejuvenating, tightening and regenerating the skin by injecting plant extracts, vitamins, and hormones into the skin. This technique is also used to remove fats.

Mesotherapy nourishes and rejuvenates the skin by producing collagen and elastin and stimulates your skin’s metabolism.

This technique was developed in 1952 by a French doctor named Dr. Michael Pistor. At that time, mesotherapy was mostly used to reduce pain. But in the following years, it became very popular in the United States and other parts of the world.

what is mesotherapy

Today, mesotherapy is used for the following:

  • Wrinkle prevention and skin rejuvenation
  • Blur skin lines
  • Improvement, brightness of inflamed and red skin
  • Tighten loose skin
  • Treatment of alopecia – a type of disease that causes hair loss.
  • Fat removal in areas such as: stomach, thighs, hips, arms and face

How much does mesotherapy cost in Dubai, Jumeirah?

The cost of mesotherapy depends on the type of treatment and the number of sessions. Considering that it is considered among beauty treatments, it is possible that the insurances will not cover it.

How to prepare for mesotherapy? (recommendations before doing)

Before the mesotherapy is performed by the doctor, you should avoid taking drugs such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory steroid drugs for a week before. These drugs may increase the risk of bleeding and bruising during mesotherapy.

What is done during mesotherapy treatment?

First, anesthesia is applied to your face, although this process may be done without anesthesia. Then the doctor starts injecting the substance in the middle layer of the skin using an ampoule with a narrow and short needle.

Depending on the conditions of the treatment, these injections are done up to a depth of 1 to 4 mm. The doctor may perform the injection at an angle or by rotating the hand. However, in each injection, only a small drop is transferred to the skin.

You need several treatment sessions to achieve the desired result. The number of treatment sessions is between 3 and 6 sessions. The first sessions are held every 7 to 10 days. If more meetings are needed, it will be repeated every 15 days or once a month.

How effective is mesotherapy treatment?

It is very difficult to talk definitively about the effects of mesotherapy, as we mentioned above, doctors have different treatment methods. In addition, in this regard, studies and experiments are limited and cannot be cited much.

According to the research conducted, the most effective of this method was to rejuvenate the facial skin

In 2012, six people were treated with mesotherapy for the treatment of wrinkles and facial rejuvenation for six months, and favorable results were observed. The same method was performed on the thighs of 20 women in 2008, which did not have much effect and no size reduction was seen.

Is mesotherapy comparable to liposuction?

Mesotherapy is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction to remove unwanted fat.

Liposuction permanently removes fat from areas such as your stomach, thighs, and back. Cosmetic surgeons perform this procedure by inserting a thin plastic tube through small incisions in the skin and then using a surgical vacuum to suction out the fat. Liposuction is performed under anesthesia.

Although liposuction is considered effective in removing fat permanently, recovery can take up to six weeks. It also has risks such as nerve damage and blood vessel damage, creating irregular lines on the skin, burns and infections. Meanwhile, liposuction is expensive.

Mesotherapy is not as invasive as liposuction. There are no incisions and the cost is much lower than liposuction. However, it may take 10 or more sessions to get the desired results.

It is not clear how effective mesotherapy is for fat removal. Not enough research has been done to test it, and the methods used vary depending on where it’s done.

Injection lipolysis is a non-invasive treatment similar to mesotherapy. The terms “mesotherapy” and “injection lipolysis” are often used synonymously, although they are slightly different.

During injection lipolysis, your doctor injects phosphatidylcholine and dexixolate into the fat layer under the skin. As with mesotherapy, there is very little evidence to demonstrate the efficacy of injectable lipolysis.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons does not recommend injectable lipolysis or mesotherapy for fat removal. They say not enough research has been done to support these treatments.
